Improve your coffee without the guesswork using a VST Coffee/Espresso Refractometer.
Put simply, a coffee refractometer analyses a sample of your coffee and returns the percentage of 'total dissolved solids' (%TDS) in the sample. When this result is entered into VST's purpose-built MoJoToGo or ExtractMoJo software, you can see exactly where your sample sits relative to the 'ideal' extraction, and therefore what you need to change to correct it! Farewell trial-and-error changes to correct grind and extraction time - the ExtractMoJo software (included in the starter kit) graphs the extraction yield so you can visualize the data, and adjust precisely what's needed, for any brewing method!
Over-extraction causes bitter taste defects; under-extraction causes sour defects. A coffee refractometer helps you centre the extraction yield, at your preferred strength, so that all of your coffee is extracted to its sweetest potential.

The VST Standard Coffee Refractometer
VST Standard (Std) Coffee & Espresso Refractometer (updated in March 2011) now includes both Coffee & Espresso TDS scales. It offers many of the features of the more expensive LAB refractometer but at a more affordable price and a more pocketable size. Coffee Mode reads percent Total Dissolved Solids from 0.00 9.99 % TDS and Espresso Mode reads 0.0 20.0 % TDS. Improved accuracy and precision +/- 0.06% warranted, +/- 0.03% TDS Coffee typical.

Standard or Lab? As a starter kit or on its own?
Both the Standard and the Lab version work very well, however the Lab version is an altogether more robust and accurate piece of equipment. We recommend reading VST Refractometer Specifications Overview which compares the Standard and Lab refractometers.
If you're starting from nothing we definitely recommend the starter kit. You need all the pieces in the starter kit to use the refractometer and it's far cheaper buying them in the starter kit than separately. The only time a refractometer on its own is recommended is if you already have some parts of the starter kit.
